Directions: Over the past decade, chatting online has skyrocketed in popularity, especially among the younger generation. Today, the number of students using Internet chat tools isat an all-time high. In your opinion, is chatting on the Internet good or bad for students?

Nowadays, many children are computer-savvyby the time they reach elementary school.With a computer and web access, today’s youth can play games, read the news, watch videos and go shopping — all without leaving their keyboard. Chatting on the Internet is another online activity that hascaught on among students. While chatting online does offer certain benefits to students, it can alsointerfere with both their studies and their social life.

The biggest disadvantage of online messaging is that it can cause students’ schoolwork to suffer. Unlike in the days ofmodems and dial-up connections when Internet users stayed online for relatively short periods of time, most Netizenstoday have unlimited web access and often stay connectedfor hours on end. Young people can get caught up in protractedconversations with friends about everything from the latest movies to dating and relationships. In some cases, students may develop a chatting "addiction"thatdepletesthe already limited time available for schoolwork.

Today’s young people spend large amounts of time on their computers and, as a result, stay much more confined indoors thanmembers of previous generations. While the use of instant messaging tools can allow classmates to stay connected, it can alsoeat intothe time they spend in real face to-face interactions. High schoolers and college students, in particular, are stillin the process ofdeveloping their social skills. Those who spend an excessive amount of time online may jeopardize their ability to interact with others in offline, real-world scenarios.

In addidon, chatting online is an easy andcost-effectiveway for students to keep in touch with friends and family, especially for students who are living far away from home.

However, students must be sure to limit the time they spend chatting online, or their academic work and social life will eventuallypay the price.
