英语习语：edge 是边缘的意思，但 on edge 为么不是在边缘的意思

定冠词 the 用在名词之前，用来将其定义为特定的东西，如先前说到或已知的东西，独特的东西，或说话人识别的东西，那样当暗示在什么的边缘时用 on the edge of sth，而不是 on edge of sth，如 on the edge of the cliff，意为“在悬崖的边上”，那样 on edge 是什么意思呢？
介词 on 最基本的意思是“在…上”，一般是意指接触物体表面或形成物体表面的一部分，如 a picture on a wall，意为“墙上的画”，on the table，意为“在桌子上”，例如：
Put it down on the table.
把它放在桌子上。

只要是暗示位置的名词，无论是 wall 还是 table 或任何其他的，就能用 on 来暗示位置上的关系，此时物体之间都会有很知道的位置关系；那样当遇到“非位置”的名词，如 on purpose 或 on demand 时，on 就不是“在…上”的意思了。
那样 on edge 亦不可理解为“在边缘”，由于这儿另一个物体与 edge 的关系不知道，亦便是无指定是哪个 edge，因此呢 on edge 有其他的意思。
然而倘若不可很好把握 on 的用法，那样 on edge 将会是一个抽象的概念；其实介词 on 有的时候能够用来暗示活动或状态，如 be on business，意为“在工作”，be on<a style="color: black;">vacation</a>，意为“度假中”，等等。

一样地，on edge 中的 on 亦是用来暗示状态的，它能够意为“紧张不安；激动；烦躁”，类似于 nervous，例如：
She seemed a bit on edge the whole evening, which I put down to work stress.
全部夜晚她似乎有点紧张，我把这归因于工作压力。
We were all on edge as we waited for the surgeons report.
在等待外科大夫的报告时，咱们都很紧张。

类似的短语还有 on display，on time 或 on schedule 等，其中间商词 on 与所修饰的名词之间无其他限定成份，由于一旦有了，那样修饰的本质就会出现变化，亦便是被修饰的成份已然被限定了，有可能是特指，例如：
Things have to happen on schedule in a theatrical performance.
在戏剧表演中，事情必须按时出现。
Chinese will be on the school schedule from next year.
从明年起始中文将排进学校的课程表。

又如 on hand 和 on the hand，很显著 on the hand 是“在手上”的意思，那样 on hand 呢？根据上面的分析，on hand 中的 on 不是用来暗示位置的，由于它无交代清楚是谁的手与其他物体的关系。
以此类推，任何其他的介词在修饰名词时，倘若是暗示位置关系，那样物体之间的关系是知道的，且介词所修饰的名词都是详细的名词，换句话说便是介词所修饰的名词都是有其他限定成份（the，an/a，my，this 等等）修饰的，否则可能另有它意。
当介词所修饰的名词时抽象名词时，如 above suspicion（无可置疑），那样能够100% 肯定的是介词不是暗示位置关系的，又如 on sbs suggestion（在某人的提议下）。
